Go forth, forget and recreate. With these words I closed off my liner notes for the first Généalogies pieces which were released as a vinyl album in September 2020. Somehow this call to action got back to me.

My fascination for imperfection, the failure of memory in general and the way all these elements create their own realities has become my main subject of study ever since releasing Généalogies. With tape as my instrument I feel I’m working with the physical form of sound en thus the one shape which can be subject to (un)controlled physical interference of the outside world.

In comparison to the first series of Généalogies pieces I more or less retracted myself from the process of creation. Let me rephrase: I gave way to the sounds, notes and spheres and let it run it’s course within a specific system. Therefor in this case I feel more like a process supervisor than a composer: I just set the ground rules for things to happen. Exactly how the world works: you bend your own reality hoping to change your world a little bit, but I'll always find the world will just run its course in some unforeseen way.

The biggest difference with my previous work on the theme of self-generating realities is the focus on feedback as the main creative force. Généalogies was all about making copies until there was no original left. This time I used feedback as my guide: tape-feedback, echo-feedback, oscillators, matrix-mixers and everything I could get my hands on could work as a sound-generator, as soon as I gave the sound back to it’s initial source. Magic came around more than once. Maybe it’s my take on the 1 + 1 equals 3 paradox.

And again I found solid evidence for my statement: imperfection - feedback systems, saturation systems etc. - creates new worlds in which the very reason for creation in the first place can be found. So I guess I’ll just keep repeating myself: go forth, forget and recreate.
